Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation Review

Here it is, the most talked about product in the new Fenty Beauty line: the Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation ($34), and with much trial and error, including my adventures trying to find the right shade, I believe I have a good sense of the hits and misses of this product. Fan girl aside, lets get down to business of the most hyped foundation out right now.

According to the Sephora website, Fenty Beauty's Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation is a "soft matte, long-wear foundation with buildable, medium to full coverage, in a boundary-breaking range of shades." It is meant for all skin types and is formulated with parabens and phthalate and is cruelty free.

The Good:
  • Mattifying: If you know me, you know I have oily skin, especially during the summer time. With most foundations, I would need to blot and/or powder every 3-4 hours. However, I've worn this product on 12 hour days and it was only at the end of my days when I would see some oils peak through, which is unheard of. I don't know what kind of witchcraft Rihanna has put into this, but whatever it is, keep it coming!
  • Weightless and long-wearing: She was not kidding about the long-wear. Like my experience with the mattifying portion of this foundation, I was amazed to see how fresh my face looked even after 12 hour wear! No touchups, nothing. As an added bonus, it feels absolutely weightless on my face to the point where I forget its on.
  • Transfer-proof: Trust me when I say that I've tried out many foundations that claims to be "transfer-proof," and although Pro Filt'r doesn't claim to be, it is and I love it. I'm able to hug my boyfriend without leaving a stain on his shirt or take midday naps without worrying that I'd ruin my pillows. Amazing.
  • Scented: Like most luxury products, this foundation has a scent. I can't really put my finger on it, but it has hints of floral in it. I wasn't sure if I should also include this in "The Bad" section, since there are people who are sensitive to fragrance. But, it's light and wears off throughout the day.
  • Buildable coverage: I only need one layer of this on my skin, but if needed, I can easily add another for a full coverage, yet natural look, on my face (and it doesn't feel heavy on my face either!).
  • No flashback: No added sparkles or SPF in this product, which means no ghostly, pale face during photo-ops. However, as a side note, I always apply an SPF moisturizer before application.
The Bad:
  • Oxidizes over time (make sure to blend down to your neck!)
  • Quick drying during application
  • Beauty Blender > Brush application
Final Verdict:
Pro Filt'r Foundation in Shade 330 and Killawatt Highlighter in Metal Moon

I'll be honest here, I've always been a little skeptical when it comes to celebrities entering the makeup realm. But to my surprise, Rihanna's Fenty Beauty line was surprisingly wonderful! There are a few hits and misses and products that can be improved just a bit, but the Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation is up there on my hits list. It has an affordable price and does exactly what it says it does; win-win.

However, I will admit that there are parts of this product I wish were better. The main issue I had with this is that it oxidizes on the skin, bad; even though I enjoyed wearing 330, it showed up a bit orange in certain lights. I'll probably stick with shade 310 and return the colors I purchased (330 and 370), but I would recommend selecting a shade down from your "match" and do check-ins as you wear the product throughout the day, especially in different lightings.Another issue I had was how quickly the product dried on my skin during application, which in turn would cause splotchiness. With much trial and error, I discovered that it's best to first shake the product in the bottle, squirt a pump on the back of my hand and using a beauty blender to apply the foundation on my skin. This method helped prolong the amount of time I had to apply and blend this product on my face.
