Shiseido VisionAiry Gel Lipstick in Ginza Red - Review (New Formulation!)

If you're an avid follower of beauty news, you would know that Shiseido is currently in the process of reinventing their makeup line in order to appeal to millennials. I grew up watching my mom use their products and she even works for them now (by the way, #NotAPaidPost), so I've had my hands on trying out a few of their products in the past and let me tell you - I was not impressed at all.

Therefore, I was curious when I was given this lipstick to try, knowing that this was supposed to be different that what they had released in the past. I'm a bit of a lipstick junkie, so I wasn't going to be nice when it came to my thoughts about this product, but let me just say that I was throughly impressed.

Shiseido VisionAiry Gel Lipstick in Ginza Red

Claims: According to the Shiseido website, their new VisionAiry Gel Lipstick uses "revolutionary Triple Gel Technology that allows high levels of pigment to converge with water for cushiony, comfortable, weightless color that stays put for six hours. This ultra-sleek lipstick bullet glides on to deliver bold, high-impact color in a single stroke. Available in 28 shades inspired by modern Tokyo. Dermatologist-tested."

  • Natural finish: I've never had the best relationship when it came to Shiseido lipsticks. They were always too sheer and glossy for my liking. I will admit, after my first application I was a little skeptical - the pigment was amazing, however the glossy finish threw me off. However, after a couple of minutes, the lipstick set onto my lips and turned into a wonderful matte-satin finish.
  • Pigmentation: As mentioned, Shiseido's lipsticks have always been too sheer for my liking. However, I was surprised that I only had to do one swipe on my lips to achieve such a full coverage look! Way to go Shiseido!
    • Ginza Red: the perfect red color with a subtle hint of orange, that is bold but not too loud. It matches perfectly with my medium, yellow-undertone skin tone and even makes my teeth look whiter thanks to the blue-undertone of the lipstick!
  • Long-lasting: After application, I was honestly ready to remove the product off my lips. I thought to myself - what's the point of having a glossy lipstick that'll come off after a bite of breakfast? However, I allowed the lipstick to set and to my surprise, this lipstick really held through the entire day! Of course, this isn't a liquid lipstick, so please don't think that you can kiss your S/O without wiping some product off your lips. However, I didn't feel like I needed to reapply - which is amazing!
  • Comfortable formula: I'm a huge lipstick junkie and have gone through all the various types of lip products that are currently out on the market, so I would say that I have had a good experience with figuring out what's good and what's trash. I've never heard of a gel-formulated lipstick before and was skeptical at first ("doesn't gel = product sliding off?"). However, this has to be the most comfortable lipstick I've ever used. In fact, I never had to reapply this product throughout the day like my other lipsticks and therefore, was never worried when it came to eating and sometimes forgot that I had this on!
  • Packaging: It's sleek and looks expensive. It's also compact and portable enough to slip into my pockets or handbag. I will admit I was confused at first with the double packaging of the product, however, I learned quickly that this was not like any other lipstick and there's a reason for this (gel-formulated products dry out faster).

  • Price: It's a luxury brand so I'm not surprised, but $26 is a little high up there for the cost of a lipstick and I've never shelled out more than $15 for any of my lip products. I'm a huge lip junkie but you're pushing it a bit Shiseido!
Final thoughts:

Me in Shiseido VisionAiry Gel Lipstick in Ginza Red
I'm going to be honest here, I was pleasantly surprised with this lipstick; Shiseido is really doing something here with this new makeup line and I'm excited to try out the rest of their rerelease collection! I can really tell they put their time and effort into this product by just comparing to what they've released in the past and I can definitely see them becoming competition for the currently popular makeup brands on the market!

If it wasn't obvious already, I love their new VisionAiry Gel Lipstick line! It's long-lasting, comfortable and pigmented - all things that I can ask for in an awesome lip product. It feels like chapstick on the lips but with a satin liquid lip formula - so it's not too difficult to remove but lasts all day! The price may be pushing it, but I can see myself keep these lip products in my bag and use them on the daily! I'm excited to see their options for everyday nudes and am hopeful they'll release crazy colors to compete with Mac.

Shiseido, you got a good thing going here and your attempts to market to millennials is headed in the right direction. Forget the old Shiseido, everyone! A new and improved version is coming for your coins (seriously, they're planning to have their own section at Sephora)!

Update (6-hours later):

My lips still look great even though some of the lipstick has faded in the middle from eating my lunch, which is expected. The lipstick does not look as "satin" as when I first applied, but more matte now. To my surprise, my lips still feel just as hydrated as they did this morning! Win-win!

  1. Have you tried any other shades ? I’m obsessed with this lipstick after receiving a free sample of their new Modernmatte in Exotic Red . The Modernmatte formula is TO DIE FOR !!! Just blindly ordered 2 shades in each formula . If ya have more shades , can you swatch them ?
