Derma E Blue Light Shield Spray and Concentrated Serum | Review

Regardless of your age, there are various ways that our skin is impacted by our environment. This ranges from exposure to UV rays, air pollution, and even blue light from our screens. Surprisingly, the average American spends more than 11 hours in front of a screen — that's almost half of our day! Now that we're all stuck in quarantine, our screen usage time has definitely sky rocketed more than before. Thankfully, Derma E has come out with a full range of products to help protect us from these blue lights.

Derma E Blue Light Shield Concentrated Serum and Spray

Derma E Blue Light Shield Spray ($16.95)

From their website: "Enriched with Lutein for ultimate hydration and protection from blue light, this mineral-rich spray instantly nourishes, rebalances, and revives stressed skin. Blue-Green Algae Extract boosts skin’s natural moisture levels, purity, and resiliency while Activated Charcoal uplifts and purifies dull tired skin and Ginseng Root revitalizes for a fresh and brightened complexion."

  • Pros: I love the scent of this product, I feel like I am at a spa when I spray it on my face. I like to use this product like a setting spray after I've applied my makeup in the daytime. I've noticed that it helps keep oils at bay on skin throughout the day and hasn't reacted negatively to my setting powder.

  • Cons: This spray contains the following ingredients: witch hazel and various essential oils. I highly advise testing on a patch of skin first as essential oils can be reactive on sensitive skin due to the fragrance.

Although there is no way of me to prove that this product is protecting me from blue light, I like that I'm still able to take preventative measures on top of my makeup with no effort!

Derma E Blue Light Shield Concentrated Serum ($22.50)

From their website, "This concentrated mineral-rich serum delivers skin-boosting moisture to defend against environmental aggressors while neutralizing the look of photo-aging, reviving skin's appearance. Nourishing Blue Green Algae Extract, rich in antioxidants, softens and deeply moisturizes skin while antioxidant-rich Lutein helps provide a shield from blue light. Powerful Activated Charcoal helps purify while Ginseng Root re-energizes and brightens."

  • Pros: I love how lightly fragranced this product was, but also not overpowering. I've noticed my skin glowing a little more than usual thanks to the ginseng ingredient in this serum. Even though this product does contain charcoal, it's lower in the ingredients list and has not dried out my skin with use.

  • Cons: Contains some essential oils. Similar to the spray, I would highly suggest patch testing this product on your arm prior to applying this on your face if you are sensitive to essential oils.

Between these two products, I highly recommend the serum over the spray due to its ingredients list. This serum also did not pill or negatively react to my other skincare products and that is a plus for me! I'll continue to use this serum in hopes that it's helping prevent premature aging from blue light.

Additional anti-aging products...

Derma E Sun Defense Mineral Oil-Free Sunscreen, Anti-Wrinkle Toner, and Vitamin C Instant Radiance Citrus Facial Peel

Derma E Anti-Wrinkle Toner ($13.95)

From their website: "Remove impurities, rebalance skin and reduce the appearance of pores with this pH balanced, refreshing toner. Rich in skin-renewing Vitamin A and purifying Marine Plant Extracts, this alcohol-free formula leaves your complexion bright and refreshed. 100% vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, mineral oil-free, lanolin-free, gluten free, GMO-free."

  • Pros: Helps calms my skin down after cleansing. I've also noticed zits diminish quicker with the help of this toner.

  • Cons: Contains witch hazel.

I highly recommend using this product at nighttime versus the day. I mistakenly had applied this to my skin once in the morning, but ended up with a sunburnt nose, even though I had sunscreen on. This was probably due to the fact that glycolic acid is in the toner. Otherwise, I've seen some positive results with frequent use of this product, but I wish witch hazel was not in this toner.

Derma E Sun Defense Mineral Oil-Free Sunscreen Face ($19.75)

From their website: "With clear, nanoparticle-free Zinc Oxide, this formula provides safe, chemical-free broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection without irritating skin or clogging pores. Fortified with antioxidants Vitamin C and Green Tea -- nutrients that have been shown to offer an additional layer of UV protection, help skin recover after sun exposure and fight and reduce the signs of aging for vibrant, younger-looking skin."

  • Pros: Lightweight and moisturizing. Does not create a white cast on the face.

  • Cons: If you prefer chemical sunscreens over physical sunscreens, then this is not the product for you. I also wish the SPF count was higher — I'm a fan of SPF 50 for my face.

Overall, I have no complaints here! I have yet to experience any sort of irritation or negative reaction with my current skincare products. If you've been curious about Derma E, but don't know what product to purchase without fault, I would recommend their sunscreen. It's their best seller at the moment!

Derma E Vitamin C Instant Radiance Citrus Facial Peel ($23.95)

From their website: "Our radiance-boosting, non-abrasive blend of Alpha Hydroxy Acids helps to resurface and smooth skin’s texture to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles."

  • Pros: Easy to apply and remove, and smells delicious! Moisturized my skin and prepped it for the rest of my nighttime skincare routine.

  • Cons: Like a real chemical peel, this does cause a slight warming and burning sensation to the face. For those with sensitive skin, I would highly recommend patch testing this product prior to applying this on your face. My skin was red during use and was still slightly red for 5 minutes after I washed the peel off.

I believe this facial peel has potential with further usage. I've only been able to use this product twice and will update this post on any results I may see with frequent use to see if this will "brighten" my face. My skin did feel soft after use, but nothing crazy like a regular sheet mask could do. Obviously, this product is not as strong as a true facial chemical peel, so dramatic results should not be expected.

Final brand thoughts:

Although I didn't love every single product on this list, I will say that there are a few products that I will continue to use and add to my usual skincare routine! My skin has been going through trying times at the moment, so hopefully these products can help settle the stress that it has been going through this past month. Overall, I love what the brand stands (cruelty-free and environmentally friendly) for while also being super affordable! Check out Derma E and if you've tried any of their other products, let me know what your hits and misses are. I love that they have a full collection for all skincare needs! You can find them on their website or Ulta, Sprouts, Target or Whole Foods.
